Backdrop Health was founded to commercialize novel technology developed at The University of Utah, in a lab led by Prof Mark Yandell at the Eccles Institute of Human Genetics. Mark's team has developed a new way of applying big data and machine learning techniques to the vast body of information in modern electronic medical records (EMRs) and related data (such as demographic info, genetic screening, and social determinants of health). The result is a breakthrough in the ability to identify disease signatures and to make much more precise and accurate outcome predictions about individual patients than has been possible before. Backdrop's solution applies to any disease or condition. Backdrop does not license or make available EMRs; instead we apply our software to any organization that has access to a corpus of EMRs to extract maximum value from them. We see the Backdrop solution as widely applicable to front-line health care providers (as a diagnostic aid), pharma companies for faster and better patient recruitment for clinical trials, and insurers / payers.
