Note from the President

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

August is typically a quiet month, but not for BioUtah!  There were a lot of fruitful activities supporting Utah’s life science community this past month.

On August 11, BioUtah and AdvaMed hosted an executive roundtable event at the UofU’s Center for Medical Innovation to honor Senator Hatch.  BioUtah and AdvaMed were joined by more than 30 medtech executives to present Senator Hatch an award for his leadership and support for advocating policy initiatives that promote medical innovation and patient access to care.  We were honored to have Tim Ring, Chairman and CEO of CR Bard and Scott Whittaker, President and CEO, AdvMed join us for this special event.  The medtech executives highlighted their appreciation for Senator Hatch’s leadership and tireless efforts to try and eliminate the medical tax device tax and success in temporary two-year suspension which has provided needed relief to the industry.  They provided specific examples how the delay has helped their companies reinvest in R&D, infrastructure, and workforce expansion, which has helped Utah’s economy grow.  After the breakfast, Tim Ring hosted the Senator for a tour of CR Bard’s manufacturing facility.  Hopefully you saw the full-page ad AdvaMed and BioUtah placed in the Salt Lake Tribune and Desert News thanking the Senator for his leadership and our joint press release, which ran the same day.  You can find AdvaMed’s newsletter reporting on this story here:http://storypartnersdc.com/AdvaMed/Advamed2016newsletter%20-%20August.html

We would also like to thank Shawn Fojtik for hosting a fun and relaxing networking event in his beautiful home in Park City!  What a great night networking with over 40 of our life science colleagues. Please visit BioUtah’s events calendar for other great networking opportunities coming up.

On August 30, Snow Christensen & Martineau (SCM) sponsored a luncheon on “Patenting Diagnostics Methods” and facilitated a discussion on the relevant court decisions and US Patent Office policies and practices relating to patent eligibility of diagnostic methods, providing practical guidance on how to successfully obtain patent protection for diagnostic methods.  Thank you, Chris Wight, for leading this complicated discussion and SCM for hosting this event.

Lastly, registration and sponsorship opportunities are open for BioUtah’s annual Utah Life Science Summit, Frontiers of Innovation and Regulation, on October 6!  Please visit our website at utahlifesciecesummit.comfor all the details  We are excited to announce a new and interactive format including a series of “Life Science Talks” and more in-depth working sessions as well as an all day regulatory, compliance and quality working session.

As always, please feel free to call or email me with any questions, new ideas or suggestions on how BioUtah can work better for you!

Warmly,

Science, Critical Thinking, and Curiosity: the Trifecta For Our Children’s Future

Humans are naturally curious. Throughout time, we have wanted to understand the world we live in and have used various methods to do so. Science has proven to be the best way. Through scientific approaches and critical thinking, humans have explored and learned what things are made of, how they work, and what they do. Technology has applied that knowledge to create “things” that make our life better in all areas: work (software and computing), home (appliances), personal (mobile devices, games and entertainment technologies).
